Welcome

Burma Border Projects (BBP) is a non-profit, charitable foundation established to support and augment existing relief efforts along the Burma-Thailand border.

Inside Burma, there are hundreds of thousands of internally displaced people of different ethnic backgrounds who have been forced to leave their homes and villages by the hostile and life-threatening actions of the Burmese government.

To escape persecution by Burmese troops, these groups of individuals and families have had to trek through  malaria-infested jungles in order to reach the relative safety afforded by makeshift camps erected along the border between Burma and Thailand.

While tens of thousands live in these refugee camps, over 1 million Burmese live in Thailand illegally as migrant workers, where they confront every adverse condition imaginable, most notably lack of medical care.  Roughly 150,000 reside in refugee camps, where mere subsistence is a daunting challenge.  Nearly all of these refugees suffer to varying degrees from post traumatic stress disorder.

Through the courage and actions of  Dr. Cynthia Maung, herself a Burmese refugee, these people now have clinics with trained medics to administer to their medical needs.

It is the privilege of Burma Border Projects to assist Dr Cynthia and many other groups along the border in a number of ways, notably in providing culturally relevant mental health training to local medics and women's groups and in supporting essential community projects, such as schools for children of migrant workers, orphanages, safe houses, and funding for Shan medical clinics in the infamous Golden Triangle area of Northwest Thailand.
