BBP Programs

Counseling Training:

One of Burma Border Projects' primary goals is to address the mental health and psychosocial consequences of trauma experienced by Burmese refugees associated with human rights abuses and dislocation. This is accomplished by working collaboratively with local organizations that support and provide assistance to Burmese refugees, migrants and internally displaced people by providing culturally relevant education and training and mental health clinical services.

Other BBP Projects:

1. Mae La Orphanage: In 2000, BBP paid for the construction and continues to fund the operation of an orphanage which houses, feeds and supports the educational needs of some 60 refugee children and teenagers who live in Thailand's largest refugee camp.

2. Mae La Orphanage II: This past summer, we were asked to construct and support another "Boarding House" (essentially an orphanage) to take care of another 50 or so new arrivals who were recently living as Internally Displaced inside Burma. Predictably, we said "yes", and have committed to supporting this new facility for another year.

3. Schools: BBP has continued its funding of two schools for migrant worker children in Mae Sot established by the Karen-led SAW (Social Action for Women). One of these schools educates 150 students and has a waiting list. If we had the funding we need, we could clear that waiting list quickly.

4. Medical Clinics: Shan medic Sai Sam was forced this past year to move his medical clinic from the Thai to the more vulnerable Burmese side of the border in the notorious "Golden Triangle" area. BBP supported the construction of this new clinic and continues monthly funding to Sai Sam to enable him to bring his most seriously ill and injured patients to the nearest Thai hospitals. These patients would otherwise have little chance of surviving.

5. Temporary Shelter for the Very Young: BBP's highly successful "Alternatives to Abandonment" program continues to rescue babies and pre-school age children from likely abandonment by young mothers who are itinerant workers and would have found it nearly impossible to care for their babies and survive themselves. We have nearly doubled the capacity of this program during this past year. Already, a number of mothers have been reunited with their children and have resumed caring for them.

6. Mae Tao Clinic: BBP continues its funding of Dr. Cynthia's Senior Administrative Assistant, Ms. Lisa Houston.
