John J. McCarthy, Ph.D.
Dr. McCarthy is a psychologist with more than 30 years experience in treating families, couples and trauma. His current focus is in developing a model that will allow for the interweaving and staging of family and couples therapy with individual trauma therapy. Dr. McCarthy has worked in public schools, community mental health agencies and private practice, and has collaborated on initiating and developing innovative therapy programs; e.g., an alternative high school to help emotionally and behaviorally disordered adolescents.
He has led a comprehensive group therapy program for chronically thought disordered young adults as well as implemented a mindfulness based stress reduction program for chronic medical and emotional problems. Since 1997, Dr. McCarthy has been using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) to treat trauma.
He has become an approved consultant of the EMDR Institute and has been part of a training and on-going consultation at a local mental health facility through the Humanitarian Assistance Program of the EMDR Institute. Since 2000, Dr. McCarthy has traveled 8 times to the Thai-Burma border where he has trained trainers and provided clinical services to refugees as part of the mental health team of Burma Border Projects.
