Elizabeth McCarthy

Elizabeth McCarthy is a public health practitioner working with HIV/AIDS treatment programs in resource-limited settings with the Clinton Foundation HIV/AIDS Initiative (CHAI).

Elizabeth started her public health career in Madagascar as a Peace Corps Volunteer. She lived and worked in a town called Ambositra in the haut-plateau region. After completing her two-year service, Elizabeth was asked to return to Madagascar for another year to train a fresh group of health volunteers before they left for their sites around the island, and then to provide them with ongoing technical assistance.

Elizabeth received her MPH from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2002.  She then joined the Centers for Disease Control’s Global AIDS Program (GAP) as a research fellow working with a team of behavioral scientists to implement radio serial dramas with the goal of HIV prevention through realistic (and dramatic) modeling of behavior change.  Elizabeth later joined a GAP team working with vulnerable populations with whom she designed training curricula for use in the prevention and care of HIV.

Elizabeth has been a BBP board member for several years and had the opportunity to travel to Mae Sot in early 2004.
